The Luminous Egg: Visual Suggestion

Remember that floating orb I wrote about? It's the piece of art I bought by/from my artist-buddy Carrie Knowles. I had to have it because it looks like the image of a floating ball of light that inspired both the biography I'm working on, and the new novel (tentatively "Pascal's Fire") that I have also (barely) begun.

Here you see the ball of light, in the center of the mantel in my office. I'm delighted to have it there. And it's not just to make the place look more interesting.

I find if I put a visual image of a goal before me, I'm more likely to reach that goal. CONSTANT SUBLIMINAL SUGGESTION works wonders on my typing fingers. I've found it almost magical.

Anybody else had any experience with this sort of thing?

I thought all the comments were going to be fascinating discussion... wonder why the spam is hitting this particular post so intensively?

Yes, I do find that putting something visual in front of me while I write is an effective way to keep the flow going.

On my blog you'll find a photo of one of my little altars, which I think of as the home fire that keeps on burning throughout the process.

I add other things along the way. Quotes tacked to my bulletin board, objects that have something to do with the book itself, and each novel has its own black moleskine used for random thoughts/ideas/quotes/photos/etc.

Not visual but audible - I create a file for songs for each novel and often enough, just listening to each novel's personal "soundtrack" can whip me into a writing frenzy. :)

I'm totally intrigued with this Pascal's Fire book.

New York? There's a multi-book deal down here just waiting for you.

What a great idea to have a soundtrack for a novel!

I've played voodoo drumming through a lot of my last couple of books--Sister India, which is published, and Cobalt Blue, which isn't yet. I hadn't thought to have each novel have its own music.

And I don't know why Viagra ads are the background music for this particular post. I'm also having troule getting them deleted.

Love your altar/fire.
