Tough Love

“I used to think that self-care meant taking it easy, pampering myself, and avoiding things when stress hit. Now I know that doing the thing I'm most afraid to do is the best way to take care of myself.”
--Cory Fransway, from Judith Wright's More e-zine

Well, obviously this quote has thrown you into a tailspin of thought. I'll be interested in hearing where you come down on this fellow's stance.

This is hardly a new concept. Elanor Roosevelt once said, "Do one thing every day that scares you." In my experience, that frequently leads to learning just how un-scary that "thing" actually is. I still can't say I'm anywhere near 100% compliant with the philosophy, but it does enter into my thinking when it comes to decisions -- especially hard decisions.

That's my experience too, Mojo: finding out how unscary the thing is. But the learning doesn't seem to stick very well for me. It ought to have stuck by now.

Now that I think about it, I realize I've never done anything to assure that it does stick. One possibility: at the end of doing the non-scary thing I could remind myself (while I'm still entranced with that success) how easy it was.
