Gandhi in the 'Hood

After almost four years in my downtown Raleigh office, I have discovered that a larger-than-life-size statue of my hero Gandhi stands in a courtyard three blocks from my desk.

Here he is, located behind The Marbles Kids Museum, the model of a man who put his boldness to good use.

With that title you had to know I was gonna come running.

I work downtown too and I only learned of this a year ago. Maybe even less than a year. But here's the saddest part: I still haven't seen the statue itself. (And I thought it was in the Marbles museum, but it sure looks like it's outdoors in your photo.)

If Bapu were alive today, I suspect there's every chance that he'd be spending his time in "the 'Hood"... That was just how he rolled.

Yes, it's outdoors, Mojo, and can be seen from some distance down the block behind the museum. It's worth a walk over to have a look.

And I agree with you about what he'd be doing today.

Or maybe he'd be trying to get us out of Iraq.

Peggy,

Nice blog.

I am writing an article for www.apnatriangle.com. I will be using the Gandhi's picture that you have taken. Please let me know if it is not OK with you.

Thanks

Hi Apna, I'm glad to find out about your Triangle desi site.

Feel free to use my Gandhi photo. And, if you will, give me a credit line and say I'm a Raleigh writer, author of the novel Sister India.

Thanks. Come back and visit again.
