Go To O!

At the recommendation of Anonymous on the previous post, I just read a stunning article by a brave woman. "I Will Never Know Why" is Susan Klebold's story of living with the fact that her son committed murder-suicide at Columbine High School.

This is one full-time brave woman. I hope her telling the story is helpful to her.

I just read We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, a ficitional account of a boy who committed the same type of crime. The book raises so many questions about parenting, children, society. Gripping even after I have turned the last page. I'll look for Klibold's book, but may need to wait a little while to read it.

Mamie, I read that novel and thought it was amazing. Pretty raw stuff, and seriously unsettling. I then went to hear Lionel Shriver speak at Quail Ridge Books. I asked her about her unsparing honesty; she draws back from nothing.

She said, "That's what writing is for....What are other writers doing?

BTW, the piece from Klebold is an article not a book. And it might make you feel better.

Shriver is coming back to the store in a few months with a new book. I'm dying to hear her talk about how she went about creating the character of Kevin.

I'll look for the article. In the meantime, I'm trying to get my book club (that never reads books anymore) to read the book and discuss.
