And here is the sea-going pedal-kayak that was supposed to go with the earlier coastal-retreat post. Actually pedaling this vessel out in the mile-wide Core Sound behind the Outer Banks is a wonderful meditative little adventure. Now, as I look at this picture, it seems quite a bit like the writing/artistic experience: setting forth alone in one's little boat, afloat on a mysterious medium.

I love the photo - is that you?? I think you're right about the similarity to the writing life, and I love the fishing trawler in the background - the kayak seems to be making its way in that direction - going for the big catch...!
We took a tour on a fishing trawler once and when they bring the net up, there are all sorts of sea creatures and fascinating stuff in the net. VERY much like free writing and the "developmental" approach to novel writing.
I agree about that net. Years ago I decided to face whatever the net of my writing/exploration brought up--and write about it. It was that or give up fiction, because trying to toss stuff back wasn't working. And no, it's not me, it's my sister-in-law Ruth, who received that kayak for her birthday.
